PERFORMANCE
GROWN MAN NAKED PROJECT
SITUATION: Recognizing that historically
most settings where people gather and feed or “break bread” are
situations of comradely or community gathering. Within the last
decade, private sectors have been taking over public spaces;
therefore establishing an unspoken longing for community. Mall
food court placement in most malls, represent a consumption base
for refueling and strategizing the next purchase. In a mall food
court the comradely is lost because of the flux of costumers
and because the setting is a private sector; which negates the
opportunity for communal exchange.
STRATEGY:
- Hire an actress/waitress to present herself as a waiter within
a local mall food court setting.
- The piece will initiate itself by patrons that are planted
in the food court.
- The “planted” patron will
select a joke from the menu (numbered #1 - #37) and request
that it be delivered (by waiter) to the unplanted patron across
the way.
- The waiter will be going from table to table serving up jokes
from a menu.
- Upon delivery of the joke, the waitress will suggest to the
receiver of the joke if they would like to reciprocate the gesture
to the initiator or another table.
INTENT: The jokes can serve as a means of communication between
these isolated points (costumers) as an attempt to create a communal
situation. Bringing the situation to a level that might represent
a picnic; therefore slowing the consumption process down and opening
up verbal exchange amongst patrons.
PAST FINAL OUTCOMES: Most of the
patrons from the food court receive the joke and reciprocated
the joke onto another patron. Laughter and waving of hands back
and forth by the patrons will give the atmosphere of the mall
food court a more familiar and friendly setting.
